Eating disorders are a treatable medical illnesses that affect both males and females. They are most common during teen years or young adulthood but are also prevalent in children and adults later in life. A common misconception is the cause of eating disorders. They actually are rarely about food or wanting to be thin. Researchers are discovering that eating disorders are due to an interaction of genetic, biological, psychological and social factors. Eating disorders often coexist with other illnesses such as depression, substance abuse, or anxiety disorders. If a person does not receive treatment, the symptoms can become life threatening. In fact, anorexia is the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder. The three main eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating.
